The changing face of the Bowery is evident in many ways, but among the most notable shifts in the landscape is the New Museum. The museum, a shimmering aluminum and stacked-box design, opened in December in its new 60,000 square foot building—a fitting way to begin its 30th anniversary year.
The distinctive architecture reflects the museum’s mission, a philosophy summed up in four words: new art, new ideas. These days, the museum is as fresh and modern as ever, with two exhibitions opening in April that are sure to draw attention. The first exhibition features paintings by the German artist Tomma Abts, a 2006 Turner Prize winner known for her commitment to abstraction. The second features a new series of animated projections by the New York–based artist Paul Chan.
The museum also offers programs like Night School—which encompasses public seminars, workshops, screenings and lectures—and Get Weird, a monthly series of performances featuring experimental music. Recently, it instituted Target First Saturdays for Families, offering free admission and special hands-on programs for families with young children (advance registration required).
